Donald Freake

Passed away on Sunday, March 17,2024 at his home in Boyd’s Cove , Mr. Donald Freake, age 95 years. He was predeceased by his parents, Obediah and Elizabeth, wife, Ella May (Burry), and 7 siblings: Harvey, Ina, Gordon, Rita, Mary, Stella, Charlotte and Joyce. Left to mourn his passing with fond and loving memories are his daughter, Joy, son-in-law, Ronald, grandson Alex (Mandy), brother-in-law Albert John (Louise) Burry, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Some of his lifetime experiences were fishing, woodcutting, sawmill operation, carpentry, raising sheep, beef cattle and horses. He loved to take his miniature ponies to local fairs and children’s birthday parties. He spent many hours making hay and children loved to jump in his hay loft. He enjoyed his winter log cabin and  summers at Bread and Cheese Cove especially with his grandson, Alex, who was his pride and joy.

In his younger years he was known to help students with their arithmetic and also take care of their cuts and bruises and occasionally cut a fish hook from someone’s skin.

He loved his accordion and played for many square dances. His memory was sharp and he loved to talk about his childhood memories. Anyone who would listen would hear about the “ good old times!”

His motto was “if it’s not broken, don’t replace it”. If he could repair or make an item  there was no need to purchase new.

His wish was  fulfilled that he remain in his own home until the end. Heartfelt thanks and appreciation go out to his support workers from Compassionate Care, Madonna and Lisa whom he cared for deeply and they in return.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to St. George’s Cemetery Fund will be greatly accepted.

Resting at New World Island Funeral Home, Summerford, NL with public visitation on Wednesday, March 20, 2024 from 4-6 p.m. Funeral service will take place from St. George's Anglican Church, Boyd's Cove, NL on Thursday, March 21, 2024 at 2 p.m.
