Hubert Simms

It is with deep sadness that the family of the late Hubert Simms announce his passing at James Paton Memorial Hospital in Gander, February 1, 2024. 

Hubert was born and raised on Pass Island, on the south west coast of Newfoundland, the oldest of 10 children. His father was a Merchant on the island, where he both inherited the gene and learned the art of entrepreneurship. In 1952 at the tender age of 16, he set out to make his way in the world and found himself in Corner Brook. There he met the love of his life, Caroline LeDrew, who was a nurse at Grenfell Hospital. 

Their lives began there on the west coast, where they got married and eventually made their way to Toronto with their two children to create a life in a new city. A few more years later they found themselves back in Newfoundland where they chose to settle and build their life in Boyd’s Cove. There they had 4 more children and Hubert started his first business by buying his first piece of equipment, a dump truck, because his mother in law said someone had already started a taxi service.

The years went by and the children and businesses grew. He was involved in multiple industries. From trucking, to distribution, to the fishery, and hospitality. These businesses employed both his family and many members of the local communities, who he thought of and treated as family. He loved to travel and had a sense of adventure, which was only topped by his love of food. Whenever you saw him you would surely be entertained by a story or with a tune played on his accordian. He lived life with optimism, gratefulness and a deep love for his family and friends. 

Hubert was predeceased by his father, John, mother, Ethel, his dear wife of 64 years, Carrie, his sister, Elizabeth, his brothers, Johnny and Fred, and son in law, Dennis. Left with fond memories and a legacy of love are his children Reg (Maxine), Elizabeth (Alex), Barbara, Roseanne (Tom), Steven (Marilyn) and Phillip (Lisa); grandchildren, Corryn, Stephanie, Troy, Sarah, Karly, Brandi, Chloe, Victoria, Ethan, Abby, Chase, and Felicia; great grandchildren, Liam, Reid, Olivia, Kylie, Isla, Parker, Grayson, Charlie and Carter. 

A family man, a businessman, a good man.

Resting at New World Island Funeral Home, Summerford, NL with public visitation on Friday, February 2, 2024 from 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place from St. George's Anglican Church, Boyd's Cove, NL on Saturday, February 3, 2024 at 1 p.m.
