It is with great sadness that the family of the late Chesley Coish, age 76 years, of Hillgrade, NL announce his passing at the James Paton Memorial Health Centre, Gander, NL on Friday, December 7, 2018.
Ches was born to Wallace and Eva (Collins) Coish on October 6, 1942 in Stag Harbour on Fogo Island, Notre Dame Bay. As a young man, Ches moved to New World Island and taught in several one-room schools before teaching at, the then new, Central High School in Virgin Arm, where he also spent time as Vice-Principal.
In 1961, Ches married Bernice Sansome of Hillgrade and they made their home and raised their four children there.
In the mid 1970s, Ches left the teaching profession and bought a fishing vessel, from which he made his living on the sea for over forty years. An active professional fish harvester and sealer for the rest of his life, Ches’ engine repair shop also employed several and kept many boats on the Northeast Coast on the water.
Predeceased by his parents Wallace & Eva, brothers Royburn and Lorenzo.
Ches leaves to mourn his wife Bernice, children Sterling (Kim), Sharon (Tony), Steven (Annie), Stacy (Duane), brothers Curtis, Ambrose (Irene), sisters Shirley (Martin), Bessie (Alvin), sisters-in-law Thelma (Gordon), Beulah and Olive, a large number of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.
Resting at the New World Island Funeral Home, Summerford, NL with visitation on Sunday, December 9, 2018 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will take place from the New World Island East Central United Church, Newville, NL on Monday, December 10, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. Paula Gale officiating.
