Ethel Canning Obituary

Passed peacefully away in the presence of her family at her home in Foxtrap, NL. on Thursday, December 17, 2020.  Ethel Mae Canning age 95 years formerly of Bridgeport, NL.

She is predeceased by her husband Bruce Canning (March 1998), parents Uriah & Jane Burge, infant daughter, son Andy Canning (missing since May 2019), brothers Wilfred Broomfield, Cecil Burge, Otto Burge, sister Geraldine Froude, step-brother Ernest Hill, son-in-law Cedric Mills and daughter-in-law Rose Canning.

Left to mourn with fond and lasting memories are her sons Gilbert (Lyda), Clifford (Shirley), Harvey (Doreen), Tony (Glennys), Edward, daughters Maxine (Woodrow) Boyd, Leona (Melvin), Rosena (Grant) Philpott, 21 grandchildren, 33 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren as well as a large circle of extended family and friends.

Ethel Mae was the second of five children born to Uriah & Jane Burge of Little Bridgeport, NL. Ethel lived in Bridgeport all her life until her husband's  passing in 1998. In November 2000 she moved to St. John's to live with her daughter Maxine until her sudden passing on December 17, 2020.

Ours was the wonderful Mother who gave her children life and the love of guidance and a good upbringing.

Although the world around her changed, the fundamentals of our mother remained the same......a strong work ethic, hospitality and a Christian faith that was lived rather than talked about. As a devout Christian and Salvationist, Ethel lived her values and beliefs, and by her example she inspired us all to do better, be better. She was warm, kind, compassionate and sensitive to the needs of others - even when it wasn't comfortable or convenient to do so. She never knowingly hurt someone's feelings.

She was a wonderful mother, a terrific friend, and a true Newfoundlander. She made this world a better place just by being in it. She was just an average Mum who believed she had done an average job. But to this ordinary family, she was an extraordinary hero. She will be lovingly remembered in Christian love and eternal hope.

Resting at the Clarence Wiseman Central Salvation Army Corps, Moreton's Hr., NL. Public visitation will take place on Saturday, December 19, 2020 from 2-4 p.m. subject to Covid 19 regulations. Funeral service will take place from the church on Sunday, December 20, 2020 at 11:00 a.m. for invited guests only.
