Mildred Gidge Obituary

Mildred was born, the youngest of three children, to Stephen and Helen (Adams) Powell on December 2, 1936 in Merritt’s Harbour.  On February 10, 1959 she married Allan Gidge of Fairbank.  They made their home in Merritt’s Harbour where they raised their boys, Billy and Danny.  After a time working at the Union Store in Herring Neck as a young woman, Mildred made her life’s work the care of her family.
While Allan worked away from home for long periods, she was an expert homemaker and the best cook and baker.  She was always happy when others enjoyed her cooking but maybe wished they didn’t enjoy her baking too much so that there would be more of the dessert left for her to enjoy as her sweet tooth was a very big one.  She gave a lifetime of care to her widowed mother and was more than just a grandmother to Helen.  Many enjoyed her famous chocolate cakes but she added a special touch of love to them for Stephen as they were his favourite, and she was Norah’s biggest fan until the end.
A Life Member of the United Church Women, Mildred was faithful to her church and supported its life and work.  Health and circumstances meant a move to Gander for Allan and Mildred in 2019 and the staff of both Golden Years Estates and Lakeside Homes were a circle of care and love for Mildred in her last years.
Mildred was predeceased by her parents Stephen and Helen Powell and parents-in-law Obadiah and Olive Gidge, her brother Frank (Marjorie) Powell, sister Blanche (George) Rice, daughter-in-law Matilda, niece Shirley Mehaney, most of the extended Gidge family in-laws, and many loved ones and friends.
Left with wonderful memories are Allan, her husband of
sixty-three years, sons Bill (Ardena) and Dan (Paula), grandchildren Helen (Joshua) Rideout, Stephen (Brianna Bredin), and Norah, sister-in-law Marie Gidge, extended family and friends and her beloved church family.
